When your grandkids think meeting crocodiles is normal… When I look back at my holiday photos I can see why Mum was inspired to write about a cute little English mouse making friends with other rural Brit wildlife. We lived in Hong Kong for seven years and were fortunate to travel all over Asia- so the kids got to meet all kinds of weird and wonderful creatures. Kangaroos, elephants, snakes… Visiting Mum’s bungalow with a GARDEN was such a contrast to our life in a 14th floor apartment looking out over the South China Sea. The stories about Henry and his adventurous friends tackling ivy clad walls, blackberry bushes and compost heaps helped my children maintain a connection to their own annual escapades collecting snails and picking wildflowers. I wonder if tending to their windowsill succulents in their own apartments is enough of a countryside fix for my kids these days? When I showed this first edition to my “school-teacher-friends” they encouraged me to go ahead and publish the rest of Henry’s tales. Thanks to the expertise of my daughter as my editor, publisher, lawyer and social media maven, my little stories became three beautiful books. Here I must pay tribute to our illustrator, Barbara Richards. If these creatures bring to mind classic tales from the English countryside like Kenneth Grahame’s “The Wind in the Willows” or Beatrix Potter’s enchanting books, you would be, as the British say, spot on. The aforementioned animals all appear in “The Adventures of Henry the Field Mouse,” penned by Dockstader’s mother, Jo Coker of Gloucestershire, England. What began as a sheaf of old letters blossomed into a children’s storybook with two sequels, an intergenerational project that brought Dockstader’s far-flung family together in ways she couldn’t have imagined.
